There are 3 ways of connecting to SWIFT as follows.
a. Direct Connection
This option allows a private and direct connection for a Bank/Institution to connect to the SWIFT network. With this the organization can install the SWIFT Interface software, security and network connectivity in their own premises and mange the components themselves.
b. Shared Connection
This option allows the organization to install the SWIFT Interface software in their own premises and work with another party to provide the network connectivity. Thus the external network connection is shared by the sharing party.
For eg. A big bank can allow a small bank to use their network infrastructure to send/receive SWIFT transactions.
c. Service Bureau
Using this option an organization can entirely outsource the day-to-day operation of your SWIFT connection to a third party, termed as Service Bureau. The Service Bureau will then operate the connection to SWIFTNet and share this with multiple banks.
Mostly in an ideal Service Bureau setup, the Bank has the SWIFT interface installed within their premises and only the external SWIFT connection is outsourced.
